Ben is a dynamic musical director, singing teacher and composer, recently named as the winner of the 2022 Offie Award for Best Musical Director for his work on Godspell (Off-West End, Ye Olde Rose And Crowne). His training includes an MA in Musical Direction from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and BA (Hons) degree in Music from The University of York alongside extensive qualifications in singing. Additionally, he is a registered Vocal Health First Aider with Vocal Health UK. He is currently working toward his PGCert in Vocal Pedagogy with Voice Study Centre and The University of Wales (Trinity St. David).
Ben is currently serving as Musical Director for the new Off-West End Revival of Ordinary Days (The Cockpit, directed by Julie Atherton), BBC Children In Need (The Natural History Museum), The Producers and Evita (City Academy). His extensive theatre credits most recently include serving as Musical Supervisor for The White Handkerchief (Derry Guildhall, Broadway On Demand) featured in the BBC Four and BBC One NI documentary of the same name, and as Musical Director for The Music Of James Bond (National Tour, Germany) and Godspell (Ye Olde Rose And Crown - winner, 2022 Off-West End Award for Best Musical Director). Other recent credits in theatre include Edges, I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change! (The Playhouse, Derry), West End Misfits (The Other Palace), Peter Pandemic (Canal Café Theatre), Sweet Charity (Emil Dale Academy), Peter Pan, Avenue Q (City Academy), Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella (Imagine Theatre Ltd.) and Lizzie And The Dark (Opera Schmopera). He is also looking forward to conducting Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella at The Bridewell Theatre in November 2022 and serving as Musical Supervisor/MD for Beyond Belief - The Life And Mission of John Hume in Derry Guildhall in 2023.
As a choral director, Ben has enjoyed many and varied appointments including conducting for BBC Children In Need in Hintze Hall in London's Natural History Museum, Military Wives Choir York, who he served as Musical Director between 2014-2018, leading the ensemble through an ecclectic performance diary of concerts, album recordings and appearances, including Remembrance Sunday services in York Minster Cathedral, open air concerts as part of Scarborough Proms, most recently headlining Alfie Boe, and recordings with Lulu and Aled Jones and for BBC Radio 3. Other choral direction credits include conducting for Harmonize Contemporary Choir, Park Grove Children's Choir and Vocal Point and serving as Guest Conductor for BBC York in Harmony and Easingwold Singers.
Alongside his work in music direction, Ben is in very high demand as a singing tutor, with considerable experience teaching in some of the UK’s leading arts institutions alongside a very busy private practice, including Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, Laine Theatre Arts, International College Of Musical Theatre (ICMT), Emil Dale Academy, Italia Conti Academy, Momentum Performing Arts Academy, PQA College and SLP College, where he served as Director of Music and Head Of Singing for SLP Junior Academy. He is Resident Musical Director/Vocal Coach for Spirit Young Performers Company and South London Youth Theatre.
